Here I Go, Turn The Page

Hello again, oh diggers-of-digital-diamonds... I’ve been steadily working on chalkin’ in some scenes on the comedy script I’m developing; look Ma - I’ve made the little red bar go all the way to 30%! Woo hoo!

You also may notice I’ve added a whole new page to chronicle the methods of my scriptwriting madness (and also leisurely trips wherever I may roam.) View a slick slideshow of my Flickr feed by clicking the images on the new page aptly named, “Photo Journal.”

Well, I’m off to Never-Neverland.* Do yourself a little R&R favor: recap with a viewing of Casino Royale, proceed to a theater for the happy havoc of Quantum of Solace, and OD on tryptophan by consuming copious quantities of turkey this next week. You’ll thank me later.

*Third Metallica reference in this posting, if you’re counting...

Flick My Bic

I’ve finally entered the year 2000. To the right, you will see a slender group of pics - fresh from Micah’s photobooth! Click on them, and bam! - you’re in my world. Yup - I’ve started a Flickr feed and after much tinkering - finally incorporated it into my site... Every time I snap something from my cameras as I travel & create - you’ll be the first to know. For instance, I recently hit up the venerable roadside attractions Ocean World & Trees Of Mystery in Northern California, and have some cool pictorial booty (not that kind.) Did you know if you put a large sea anemone on your tongue, it can have a numbing effect on par with novacaine? Did you know that Redwood bark has no pitch or resin, making it favorable to build homes with due to it’s resistance to fire & that it’s impervious to disease & insects? Science is soooo cool...

Why are the edges of the pictures blurred? Old-school vignetting, sucka! Let’s break through the digital clarity with some mood & attitude, shall we? Over the long winter, I should be throwing up some actual Polaroids documenting my progress on crafting my comedy screenplay... Huzzah!

Japanese Do It Better

So you saw Dark Knight, and you loved it. What to do now - wait another 2 years for it’s sequel? Rent ‘Batman: Gotham Knight’, that’s what! This film (created by the same production team of Batman Begins & The Dark Knight) is a visceral treat of short stories crafted by the most revered names in Japanese Animation - all spun together as one cohesive whole. Want to know what Batman really thinks while he’s kicking ass? How did he get to the point where physical pain simply doesn’t bother him? Besides being some of the most beautiful animation ever filmed - this experiment takes you deeper into the psyche of the tortured hero, and is one of the best tributes to Batman’s mythology - in any medium. You need to watch this.

Batman Gotham Knight - Official Trailer

I Got Run Over...

...by a Mack truck today - and I feel fine. As I continue my descent into the writing of a comedic (yet meaningful & artistic) feature film, I had begun investigating how I would physically lay out my 3.5” cards for determining the screenplay structure. For those of you who don’t know, 3.5” cards are the old-school, Kid-Tested Mother-Approved™ method for writing the scenes of a film... It works, because you can then move them around and play with the scenes, adding and subtracting characters and filling in the plot so it churns out poetically and (hopefully, unless you’re David Lynch) - makes sense.

I’ll be using this method, and bringing it into the year 2000 by translating the script to a wonderful screenwriting program for Apple Mac computers dubbed “Montage.” I had toyed with the concept of purchasing a huge rolled sheet of magnetic material and coating my bedroom wall, so I could use magnets to easily jockey the scenes around. Besides being a female dog to hang or schlack in place - I realize - although cool - there is a better way. One that is more daring, more ass-kicking - more Micah.

I’ve decided to bring it full circle & point back to my roots, by stretching a massive canvas to be the structure to tape my cards onto (‘stretching a canvas’ is the lingo painters use referring to pulling the swatch of canvas tight and stapling it to a wooden frame to prepare for paint.) This rectangle many feet across will lean up against my wall, and serve as my mental playground. The clencher is - when I’m done with the writing of the film, I will use this same, very surface to paint an original movie poster for the film (the dimensions will be proportionate.) Like the native tribes who use every bone and shank from the kill - I will reuse the structure that not only embodied the writing, but the visual theme as well - incorporating many artistic passions into one artifact. The final piece will be on display at the film’s premier. HOW YA LIKE THEM APPLES?

Website BeDazzlement

"Yay-yeah! Whhhhattt!?!?"

I’ve been tweaking out with some Photoshop / design / code action for a fun, shiny enhancement to the front page of my site... A smallish bubble of a flash animation sliding headshots by as they rise through a dark ooze.

To me - it’s a subtle, kooky piece of slick. I dig it. I made sure the greys and reds tie in the other colors on the page, because I’m a nerdy artist like that. Enjoy - and that, my friends - is what you call “bling.”

Happy Little Trees

Pushplay Productions
This last week, I had the pleasure of working with PushPlay Productions in Eugene on an art instructional video. I was using an airbrush device made by a cool Japanese company, where I showed the mechanics, clean-up and basic design functions possible with this amazing little kit. Word on the street is it’s a hit with the kids who labor over gorgeous manga drawings. I hope my voice gets dubbed over! It would fulfill this young samurai’s dream...

I’m taking a break from the heady texts of film creation & performing to read “To Own A Dragon: Reflections On Growing Up Without A Father” by Donald Miller. I’ve read everything he’s written, & latest work promises to be quite personal... Donald speaks on life & spirituality like you’re having a beer with your best friend, only he’s probably funnier.
Can you smell - what Barack is COOKING?

I’m also gunning through “Hopes & Dreams: The Story of Barack Obama”. Is there anything this man can’t do? Is he truly the rockstar America needs? Personally, I’d be stoked to see Bruce Springteen as our Commander-In-Chief, but Barack may be a close second. Maybe even Alice Cooper... Have you heard his radio show? If you love the history of rock - check it out. Okay - I’m done gushing now.

Papa's Knitting A Brand New Bag

Hello to all you savvy surfers - I’m currently transitioning my website over to some hot new software, so in the coming weeks, I hope to make the experience just a bit slicker for your chewing satisfaction via some subtle changes. A tiny little ditty I’ve already added will only effect approx. .0002% of the population - but for those of you visiting who own an iPhone or an iPod Touch - when you bookmark my site, you’ll notice a cool little custom webclip-image! Crazy huh?

Anyone interested in film production needs to rent the feature, “The TV Set” - written and directed by Jake Kasdan. Starring David Duchovny, Sigourney Weaver & Justine Bateman amidst others - it is a wickedly dark & funny satire that follows a brilliant script optioned for a TV Pilot, which then gets tortured through the “Hollywood Machine.” Judd Apatow highly recommended the film for it’s ‘scary accuracy.’ There’s good advice shrouded in this film for the up-and-coming actor / writer / filmmaker, as we see what really happens behinds the scenes...

7 Million = "Low Budget"? Pshaw!

I just finished the tome entitled "Feature Filmmaking At Used-Car Prices: How to Write, Produce, Direct, Shoot, Edit, and Promote a Feature-Length Movie for Less Than $15,000." Rick Schmidt guides the newbies through the treacherous, mine-filled waters of how it really can be possible to shoot a feature-length film for peanuts...

Here's an excerpt from one of my favorite moments of the book, as Rick describes the aftermath of your first film - the "come down" after the high of achieving the impossible:

"Great art takes a lifetime of hard, relentless work. Are you up for that? Did you forget that a first feature is just the bare beginning of your career? You hardly got your toes wet and you're ready to quit? That's ridiculous. Won't it be enjoyable to tell your friends that you're making another movie? Won't it be worth it just to see the look on their faces? When they ask you "Why?" you can tell them you're an artist, and all artists are crazy. They'll probably nod knowingly and end up helping you again."

If you're considering filming your feature in High-Def digital - beware - a good chunk of this book (at least as of the third edition) is chock-full of the inanities of loading film into cameras, splicing film together, editing it the old fashioned way, etc. If you possess absolutely no interest in the history of film, then you may bang your head repeatedly into a wall; if however, you ARE interested in seeing just how lucky you are to own Final Cut on your Mac Pro with 30" Cinema Display, or you still plan on working in 16 or 35mm - this book is a fantastic crash course. Rick also details contracts, supplies needed on sets - everything to get you started. If it's good enough for Kevin Smith to endorse - it's good enough for me!

Hot on the heels - I've started a new book today, titled "The Art of Film Funding: Alternative Financing Concepts" (do you see a pattern forming here?) *wink-wink* Written by Professional Grant-Wrangler Carole Lee Dean - it promises to demystify arguably the worst part of film creation - pandering for money... Upon first impression, I notice the book has a great design layout - classy and clean, and has a smooth finish (alright, I'm a geek for design. Guilty!) After reading samples - she also appears quite eloquent; when I finish, I'll be back with my straight-shootin' review. Yee haw!

Moblogic Turns It Up To '11'

Hello my Fine-Feathered-Friends,

If you haven't yet checked out Moblogic.tv with wonderful host Lindsay Campbell - the excuses stop here... This news show is a breath of irreverent, fresh air that I've grown to look forward to every day. The peculiar aspect is that it's a production of CBS Interactive, but give it one view, and you'll understand this uncensored vodcast isn't grandma's news show...

More colloquial and closer to the heart of issues than the "Channel One" which was required viewing for many of us high-schoolers, and more genuine passion, attitude and personality than the stoic talking-heads of "MTV News" grasping for credibility - they've hit something here... Much of the format is the intelligent & witty Lindsay interviewing common Americans on the street concerning timely social issues, but now they're starting to experiment with animation - and the result could be the most unique news show this side o' the Mississippi...

Ob La Di, Ob La Da

Greetings - you may notice a couple of new banners adorning my pages; I'm in the spring-cleaning mode of nice-ing up, and I've photoshopped a sweet new banner for my About Page, & I've found an amazing picture of Oregon's own McKenzie River for my NW Links Page.

Today, I passed the 100,000 mile mark on my lovely Suzuki Swift! While this is a great testament to the longevity of Japanese engineering, unfortunately - I think my car is now having a mid-life crisis. Later in the day, my car says to me,

"Hey Micah, would you do me a favor?""Sure buddy," I say."Could you bleach my hair blonde, so I can go pick up some hot Mini Coopers at the Auto Show?"

I just stared at him. I didn't know what to say. Frankly, I didn't even know my car had hair. I guess knowing is half the battle.

∞ Cue "Lightning Crashes" by Live ∞

While celebrating the life of my car, I inevitably had to cope with a death today. My cell phone has finally met it's maker (which, I'm guessing means it materialized in front of a small child in Taiwan?) This thing had been limping along for almost 2 years now; I even bought it a new battery in the last month - and it's still kaput, this time for good. So, while I have a new phone on order - don't write me off as dead if I don't return your calls or text messages for a week or two... Believe me - I'm ecstatic about my phone dying while I'm job-hunting...

Are You A Spoke-Can, Or A Spoke-Can't?

Last Saturday, I cruised up to the lovely city of Spokane, WA to audition for a short film, in which I would play a visual artist fighting motivation, with the opportunity to paint a bit on camera... One of my many acting goals for this year is to have a professional demo reel completed with great content; painting live is a unique skill I've been eager to incorporate into performing, so I was excited to be given the part... The film will be short and sweet, produced via L.A. and will be shooting in Spokane in the next few weeks... Check out the picture from the beautiful, snow-laden town of Ritzville I passed through.

I've been detailing some multi-year projections for my acting career, and may have a swell announcement coming soon...

My Closeup, Mr. DeMille...

$#%@! eating grin...
A week ago, I had the opportunity to get some swank new headshots in Portland, courtesy of photographer / director Laura DeBar (or "De La Bar", as we say in the Biz...) There's an Ultra-Smiley face shot, an Urban Commando shot (who says sweaters are for sissies?) and a Neon Cowboy shot. The Cowboy shot was taken in the ghost town of Shaniko, OR (we were there snapping some production stills for a western short in development...) Seriously - it was 30 degrees outside with snow on the ground, but the Real Feel™ was actually 19 degrees. The things I won't do for art!

You may have noticed things have shifted a bit on my site; I'm keeping this blog of course, but making the starting page go straight to Acting. Why? Because it's my career I've spent years investing practice into, and industry folk generally don't like to have to hunt for information on talent... So there you have it...

Today is the day I literally sat down with markers and a large swath of paper, and wrote down my goals for '08... I'll hang it up where I'll see it every day; it sounds silly, but it's rather cathartic - and if you find yourself frequently sitting on your ass - you should try it too...

Frockin' A

Check out my buddy Julia Barbee from her clothing line Frocky Jack Morgan, as she starts off a cool edu-tainment segment online about desconstructing old clothes and making them new! She's won awards for her designs, and there are many segments in the series to watch...

High Time for Digital Destruction!

screenshot
Well this post is a long time coming... Most of you fine-feathered friends know the only thing that captivates me as much as make-believing on stage / film, are pretty pictures (& shiny objects - which at times, can be one and the same.) Ever since Batman The Animated Series after school when I was wee lad - I was hooked, and realized that in addition to performing like a jackass for art, I would create these images as well... I've finally finished my newest painting since my Photo + Paint show a couple years ago (I've been sketching and doing other projects, but this is big - literally! It's 24 by 36 inches...) I've gone in a different direction, and it feels liberating, as I've used quite a bit of restraint with the mediums - and yet I still enjoy the piece for it's boldness. It has an extra layer of Micah to it because it's intertwined with a performance I did this summer... Join me here to scope it out, and I encourage you to read the description below it concerning the process... There's so much symbolism in the piece I didn't put it all down, but I hope you'll have a pensive episode racking your brain over it...

In acting news, I've been tapped for a role in an upcoming "full immersion" theater experience by the Northwest Mystery Theater for an experimental short run in Portland - I'll keep you posted... The program is ambitious in that it seeks to combine the internet with live-action interactive story-telling...

Who loves you? Micah loves you... That's right - I'm debuting not one new art page / category, but 2 - count 'em 2 - for the price of just perusing my blog... My buddy and talented director Aaron Sjogren invited me to submit a slice of a video clip I created for a collaborative film project, so here it goes!

Also, take a moment to check out the new and improved Contact Page... Does a contact form really need to be sexy? No... But would we have even have a category of music called "Butt Rock" if it wasn't for spandex? Exactly.

Blue Moon, I Saw You Standing Alone

screenshot
Last Thursday was the first Blue Moon in many, well, you know... I was walking home from a concert by my friend Adam's band Next Exit: Nowhere (which was a great show, by the way) and I hear a blood curdling scream on 12th & Harrison in SE. I then see a large, muscular man all clad in black run in front of me; after yelling at a neighbor across the street, I then realized the woman was held at knife point, screamed, and the man ran away... The neighbor and I started running after the man to hopefully pinpoint his location, and as we tailed him for several street blocks - he turned a corner and was gone. The entire time the neighbor was talking to the police on a cell... Totally surreal - had the woman not screamed, she could be dead (or worse) by now...

On a lighter note (!) I auditioned for a feature film this weekend by an award-winning director & producer... I would love to work with both of them; hopefully I'll be what they're looking for and get a callback...

I started painting again about a week ago, and laid down another layer tonight (the first was watercolor, today's was acrylic) and I'm beginning to think this piece may be my best yet. I'm using quite a bit of restraint on this piece, and I think it will be that much more serene, yet at the same time bold because of this economy...

I've got some exciting auditions on the horizon (one in Corvallis, several in Portland) that are coursing through my veins... Viva Los Thespis de Icaria!

I Got 'Yer Post Right Here!

Sunday, Sunday... So good to me...

I know it's been awhile since I've posted, so maybe that makes me an e-chump? Time to kiss and make-up. I just want to say thanks to Aaron in LA, Sarah in Japan, along with Jerrod, Brandon & all the other Portland friends who gather the time and chutzpah to publish their thoughts into the stratosphere... You make for good readin', I reckon... *haccckkk - ptooey* (imagine tobacco hitting a metal spittoon. This is what Oregon sounds like.) When I don't post frequently, it's usually because I've been quite busy; sometimes with performing, sometimes visual art pieces and / or web design for friends... Lately, it's been a bit o' everything...

watermark
You'll notice in the Brief Visual Tour section of my acting page that "Whisky Marine" has been added; I was finally given some screen grabs from this boisterous fantasy of a film short... Check it out...

Speaking of whisky (nice segue, huh?) did you know that American whiskey bourbon, by law - has to be aged only in brand-new charred American-oak barrels? In Canada, for instance - they're allowed to use cheaper used barrels, which in turn makes the taste less intense, and not as deep a reddish hue that good 'ol Yankee "Red-Eye" gives... I culled this info last night from a great article called "Your Bourbon to Bear" from an airplane trip to D.C. last winter, which also proves you don't have to look at the cheesy crap in Skymall while your flying - you can learn something instead!

On Easter Sunday I was inspired to do a series of spray paint pieces, and now I have all the goodies to make my imagination come alive... I took a couple of huge trips to Art Media to get canvas & supplies, and now I'm ready to dig in...

You may remember awhile back of my mentioning the penning of a script for a rock opera; well, I applied to become a part of the Multnomah County Library's Sterling Room for Writers, and last week I was officially juried in - and now I can't wait to use their resources... I'm an easily distracted kind of..... What? Huh? Oh sorry, I saw a shiny object. Where was I - ah - I'm an easily distracted kind of guy, so I find it helps if I physically set aside a time and place to brainstorm, sketch and write - so the distractions of the outside world can melt away... The Sterling Room is just such a place; seriously, in the downtown library, it's like a secret room underneath a bookcase with old, cushy leather chairs - and large, stately desks to ponder life's complexities, and channel brilliant artists of years past in the musty decor... Fantastic.
imageDB

In the winter of '06 ('twas a dark and blustery night!) I had the pleasure of meeting Kim MacQuarrie, an Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker & author who's new book, "Last Days of the Incas" is now hitting shelves (I've pre-ordered my copy...) When I first heard of this project, I got quite excited, seeing as how I'm a huge fan of swashbuckling adventure and morbidly-compelling tribal rituals... This epic tale - meticulously researched - is sure to be an intoxicating trip through history, and would make an incredible Father's Day gift...

Lastly, I've made it a point to turn up the juice a bit on my professional career habits... Sometimes I get ahead of myself and get dismayed because I'm not where I want to be in 5 years... Well dammit, I'm an actor for the long haul, and patience is definitely a virtue, especially in a market such as Portland. I found out last week that I can't gain SAG union status (which is very important for paying film & tv work) by being an extra on films in Portland, like you can in L.A.; to make a long story short, SAG doesn't have jurisdiction for extras in Portland, so gaining membership here becomes a bit more dicey...

All in all, I do feel fortunate for the roof above my head, and the simple right to be an artist who doesn't have to worry about being censored (yet!) I see the next couple of years as an opportunity to focus on my craft, and gain great experience which will prepare me for the future... Until a 'big-break' slaps me in the face, what vibes / goals can I focus on in Portland?

I feel blessed to work with talented artists, who introduce me to others, who in turn inspire me to create.

I'm definitely excited to be cast in more indie films, regardless of their length, and will pursue them whenever possible. Later this year, when I'm
minibond
cleared for time off at my day job - I'll step up and submit myself to more studio films, & get an agent if necessary...

When I can afford it (as George Costanza would say, "That's how they git cha!") I'll be taking acting workshops to hone my skills.

Slowly but surely I'm creating a little media center to organize my correspondence to Directors, Casting Directors, Writers, Actors and the like. I know an organized artist is an efficient artist, and an efficient artist who's talented and does his/her best to correspond in a unique, personable & professional way - is indeed quite a threat... If my journey as an actor and artist mirrors the discipline necessary to become an Agent in Her Majesty's Secret Service, then in the coming years - I'm training for a license to kill...

Rain / Toga Party?

screenshot1
Ahhh, to recline with nothing but a pencil, paper, overactive imagination - and 24 ounces of beer. I spent the evening sketching an addition to a project I'm working on, which I hope to unveil in the coming years... The aesthetic theme is decidedly Japanese in root, and I hope you enjoy my latest rough sketch of the fabled creature, "Sui Ryu", who has been heralded as The King of Dragons, and also The Rain King... (Perhaps Adam Duritz of 'Counting Crows' was also inspired to create a song of the same name?) You can find the piece toward the end of the image carousel on the "Sketch" page...

An ambitious and surreal short I made a brief appearance on (as the young and precocious Sandro Botticelli,) last summer has finally surfaced a trailer (that I'm not in, but it's intriguing nonetheless) - catch it below:

Mohawks & Afros

I posted a fun new sketch on my Sketchbook page today... I've been writing a humorous editorial piece about why The Holy Trinity would host the best rock concerts - EVER... The sketch posted is the illustration for the piece, or at least the preview of the felt-on-matboard creation to come... The essay is irreverent (I personally think it's right on the money) and a bit controversial, and so I'm sending it off for magazine publication...

Lastly, If you were ever strangely fascinated by Bob Ross like I was growing up, then you'll love this photoshop creation by an artist who calls himself "Robot Economist." More than a little creepy, if you were alive during the 80s - you owe it to your people to check it out... Enjoy!

Nugget in the Rough / Rock You Like A Hurricane

I feel so inclined to let you in on one of my favorite little ditties on the net: KEXP's Free Song of the Day... If you have iTunes on your computer, you can easily subscribe to this podcast... Why? It automatically plunks down a free, legal, great cosmopolitan song from a band you probably haven't experienced yet, and many of the cuts are exclusively recorded live at the station... You can also subscribe to this very podcast through the site Odeo, which can be seen to our left promoting Portland's own "The Prids"...

I've got some big news... Previously, I mentioned that the next visual art show I undertake will be filmed and turned into a documentary - well, as lovely as that would be, it's gonna have to wait... My muse is working overtime right now; I have decided to run down a dream, and pen a rock musical. That's right - a theater piece, for stage, with killer music... I'm in talks with a prolific and talented songwriter to be the Menken to my Schwartz (does that sound naughty to anyone else?) I write the story (script) and sketch the backdrops, we would co-write the lyrics - and he would handle the musical composition... 50-50, mano-e-mano. Guys, at 3 AM, on March 5th (3/5/7 - ooohh, creepy?) I started writing uncontrollably and fleshed it out later that day for the basic outline of the piece... How serious am I about this? I purchased a script-writing program for my computer today for $98 (yeowch!) and I'm investigating trademarks (another $325 to file? Double yeowch!!) My vision for this beautiful collaboration is that it will be modern, heartfelt, and innovative...

Professional Spazz?

This Tuesday, I had the pleasure of starring as an extra in the upcoming Diane Lane / Colin Hanks film, "Untraceable." Directed by Gregory Hoblit (Fallen, Primal Fear,) I spent four hours in the freezing rain with a dainty jacket and scarf, fake-spazzing out at a motorcycle wreck (which looked pretty convincing... Ewww...) I then finished the evening as a driving fan, on my way to the Portland Winterhawk's hockey game...

screenshot3
You may notice each page of my site now has a svelte, unique rectangular banner at the top (yes, I need to get out more often - and not at fake crash sites, that doesn't count.) The devil is in the details, is he not? So I thought it high-time to customize and beautify my site further with sweet photography...

I've popped in a new, recent sketch to my Sketchbook page I finished in December... What is this building? Is it the final product of Micah's global and utter domination (would that technically be 'gutter' domination for short?) That, I cannot tell you, or I'll be forced to send my lady-friend "Tonya" who will send her manny-friend "Biff" to pop you in the knee-caps (that's how we roll in Oregon...) Maybe buy me a drink someday, and I'll ooze the news over booze...

Oh The Webs I Weave...

You know, being an artist can be difficult sometimes... I'm taking a great class concerning Theology & Art Theory - why the hell do artists create? Is the compulsion born from isolation or a communal relationship with the viewer? The coursework covers everything from Aristotle, Descartes, Dualism, Picasso, the Bible, to Chuck Palahniuk and everything in between - quite thought-provoking...

On a similar note, one monkey I just can't WAIT to shake off my back will be the day I make artwork (i.e. act, paint, draw, chisel, direct, edit, saw, uh... whittle?) full-time ("You - you mean as a day job? And get paid for it? Micah have you gone utterly mad?!?") Well, I think that question will answer itself when I imbibe myself with absinthe tonight, cut my ear off and send it to a lucky lady for Valentine's Day*...

*kidding... Unless of course she'll love me forever... Then we'll talk it over like rational insane people.

Wild West / Sketchfest / She-Man?

I've included a recent promo shot of a western short film I've been cast in here... We recently took more pics to be used as props (picture frames for the set?) which spawned the swaggering cowpoke you now see paperclipped uptop... I should be making a new high-res headshot or two out of the bunch - they definitely reflect the more country-fried side of my upbringing in southern Oregon (I'm not a cowboy, but I play one on T.V.?)

The Visual Arts section has been tinkered with and updated; I recently dug up and scanned some rough sketches from the Mesh series... You may find them quite fascinating, because they were originally designed to be embellished into block prints, but being the crazy cat I am - I switched gears, swam against the spawning herd in my brain and decided to unite photography and paint... It's fun to compare the two sketches ("The Wait" & "Elemental Atheism") to their final counterparts...

Now, for no particular reason whatsoever - if you were alive in the 80's and think there is something even remotely funny about He-Man, his outfit or his haircut - then you need to take a few minutes out of your day to see him sing "What's Going On" by 4 Non-Blondes. Created by an amazing media designer who goes by "SlackCircus", I'm sure you'll agree it's absolutely spectacular.

¡The Beans Are Officially Spilling!

I'd like to give you a glimpse at the future of my artwork for the next few years... After taking two years to complete my last exhibition, I'm projecting 3 - 4 years for my next project, which is by far my most ambitious undertaking yet. Ultimately, the pieces will be large scale (we're talking as tall as myself) and to a certain extent interactive, meaning their construction will add a complexity keeping me on my toes as I forge into new territory...

Now - are you ready for the
clencher? Here's where it gets nutty: whilst I'm working full-time, (be it professionally acting or serving blue-collar food) in my spare time, I've decided to unite my loves of performing and visual artistry by filming a documentary on the entire creation process of these pieces, from start to finish... Using a High Definition camcorder and Final Cut software - if everything goes as planned, the film and the pieces themselves will be unlike anything you've ever seen before... Tentatively scheduled to hit the Indy film circuit in 2011, I've got a long and dusty road ahead... I'll post new developments here, but I've already said too much...

Judo Chop Right Down The Middle

Well, as I'm tweaking buttons and twiddling knobs to bring a better site to whomever may be reading, I've decided to sell my artwork through Google Checkout, and donate ½ of the proceeds of your purchase to a registered 501(c)(3) charity of your choosing... Rock on with your smart-shopping / good-taste-filled-(is that even a word?)selves!

Ciao Bello!

Whatta year... In January of '06, I made a commitment to myself to stop beatin' round the bush, and pursue acting professionally... After attending a workshop and participating in various random performances later - I can definitely say I've learned a heap in '06, and I'm excited to see projects take off in '07... Here, you can recap my acting credits...
screenshot3

I've also added a new page for all of you who can't wait to geek out and make your own website; I briefly describe the secret ingredients I use to make my own here...

Finally, the biggest change of all! I don't about you, but I'm a freak when it comes to DVD extras... All the behind-the-scenes footage, the storyboards - the ER-style trauma / drama of putting the production together - baby, I'm hooked. So if you're one of those people too (it's okay to admit it - this is where the healing begins...) or perhaps you like to decipher Da Vinci Codes in your spare time - then I've provided some insight into the themes and symbolism of my visual works at the bottom of each respective page... If you don't want to see this and feel ignorance is bliss, then in the words of Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "Relax - don't do it." I've gotta warn you though, once you go inside Micah's head - don't bother looking for a way out...

Naughty, Naughty Santa...

In surprising Holiday news, Santa's compound is currently under siege. In 2003, the CIA was tipped off by an inside elf informant that the North Pole 'present-factory' is actually a large-scale meth lab. For years, Santa Claus hasn't been delivering presents - he's been trading them. What could he possibly want from you? Robitussin PM. By skimming a few ounces off of each home on the planet, he has successfully stockpiled enough ingredients to never have to shop at Costco again. While children everywhere will be saddened by this discovery, scientists all over the globe are buzzing, since they finally figured out how reindeer can fly. When questioning Col. Dirk McSquarechin on how the collective Armed Forces are handling the situation, he replied, "Uhhhh... I think we'll just bomb the shit out of them."

Join us now via satellite,as we (?) here at micahmoss.com break the footage, presented exclusively in Flannelvision©®. Notice a sober, yet surprised reindeer trying to flee the compound on an escape sled with presumably a bag of "scooby snacks", or whatever the kids are calling it these days... Indeed a sad, sad day for gullible children and animal lovers everywhere. Download the 1280 x 825 desktop wallpaper on the left, and the 1600 x 1024 on the right. Happy Holidays!

A Kinder, Gentler Art

For those of you out there who appreciate my artwork, or simply want to climb inside the mind of a visual artist - I've placed up a handful of sketches in a new section! A couple have never been seen before, a couple are skeletons of souls-to-be... I'll try to update this section when I can, and now that I'm using a new cool interface for my pieces, I'll eventually change around my visual arts section and try to provide little nuggets of background on each piece...

T'is a Bit Nutty?

Crazy week indeed! So after speaking last week with the production company I had auditioned for before, I hopped back on a plane this Sunday to fly to the D.C. area to shoot some more footage for a different show possibilty, which will then be edited and presented to "Major Channel X" (No, that's not a porn channel or a militant equal rights organization.) We shot some good interaction with D.C. locals and subcultures, and I even became an honorary member of a sweet new rock band, whom shall be revealed all in due time... Nothing is certain, but if it does get the greenlight - we could start shooting 1st or 2nd quarter next year... If nothing else, I had a smoking time, and as always it was a great learning experience, and bonus - I haven't really seen D.C. since I was maybe 7th year from a zygote...

Before I left D.C., I had the pleasure of cruising one of the best free museums in the nation - the Smithsonian American Art Museum... Here's a handful of pieces that arrested my imagination:

John Singer Sargent - what...a...STUD... My shoddy snapshot doesn't do his expressive brushstrokes and use of contrast any justice...

"The Sulphur Match" 1882 (John Singer Sargent, 1856-1925)

This little vignette reminded me of the authoritative grade school teachers who were impossibly psychic, and already knew when I was only thinking about being devious...

"Classroom with 3 Figures" 1987 (Lavern Kelly, 1928-1998)

school

This animated piece took up an entire room, and wrapped around to show Alaska and Hawaii as well... I'm pretty sure I started drooling uncontrollably while standing there...

"Electronic Superhighway" 1995 (Nam June Paik, 1932 -2006)

superhighway

I love this piece - so simple, so bold, so elegant and telling with his use of linework... Definitely captured Charlie's spirit...

"Charlie Chaplin" 1918 (Sven Brasch 1886-1970)

This last one damn near scared me out of the concept of having children someday...

"Large Head" 2005 (Nina Levy)

New Horizons & Holy Boogaloo

Giddy as a l'il girl at a Clay Aiken concert - I begin the formal mapping of my next visual art exhibition... For months I've been fleshing out a concept that is... ripe? Pungent with possibilities, mature with movement, and fresh with form and function - these pieces will challenge me to no end... I can't give away too much, but to tease you (for, you know, the next 2 years or more?) just know they will be large in physical form (bigger than you, Stud) and to a certain extent - interactive (could I be any more cryptic about my adventures in acting and art these days? Sorry, it's sort of the nature of the beast right now...)

Now, I know what you're thinking - "Gee Micah, after all that nebulous talk - it sure would be nice to end today with a great video of breakdancers performing for the Pope." Well Skippy - that is something I can deliver on! Check out these masters scoring points for the afterlife:

Super-Duper

Guess what today is? Why, it's officially "Wonder Woman Day", silly! The oldest comic book store in Oregon has arranged an event of epic proportions to benefit the Bradley-Angle House and the Raphael House of Portland, by raising money to fight against domestic abuse. Over a hundred famous comic and graphic artists submitted original Wonder Woman artwork to be auctioned off for the cause, and several were in attendance signing autographs...

I also discovered today that while I'm way out of Lynda Carter's league - apparently even her mannequin won't give me the time of day (I knew I should've shaved...)

Tidbits o' Miami

I've finally been able to update a handful of pics from Miami; we start off with the Holocaust Memorial... Wow... This one didn't let up - so sad, graphic, and beautiful a structure at the same time...

One of our nights was spent jammin' to jazz at Van Dyke's Club... Phenomenal talent, and serious food...

Miami has a whole district devoted to Art Deco buildings, and they're incredible. This was my favorite - a hotel called the "Essex House", built in 1938... Incredible...
