"Bandaids &
Switchblades"
24" x 36"
My first piece bringing spray, watercolor, and acrylic paint together on the same canvas... I created custom stencils, and cut them out by hand for hours, creating layer upon layer... The gesso used to prime the canvas is actually an absorbent ground, specifically used to simulate the texture and absorbency of paper (hence, the reason the watercolor uptop didn't skid around, but stayed in place.) I savored the challenge of creating a well-crafted composition, using quite a bit of negative space as restraint and balance, and not fussing with the mediums over and over again (a temptation I continually battle as an artist.) I'm learning to trust my instincts more and more. I wanted the piece to have a lyrical quality (I think the watercolor brings this out nicely), and yet also be raw and relevant, and my friend - until you experience how fast spray paint dries and how little control you really have - you may never truly understand the urgency embedded here...
